Contemporary Shed Row Style Barn for Private Residence
The customized Hickory Greenbarn® provide seven 12x12 stalls, each connected to a turnout area that leads to larger paddocks. The barn also has areas for tack, wash/groom, and feed and storage. The shed row design includes a low curved roof, exposing a line of clearstory windows towards the southwest bringing afternoon sunlight into the stalls.
Although the site was fairly open with meadow grass and mature oak trees site, it was complicated to develop due to a multitude of regulations, which included: the Town of Woodside’s scenic corridor requirements; 100-year floodplain; wetlands; and habitat for endangered species. The wetlands + flood plan limited the development in the rear third of the property. The center third of the property became open pasture for horses with the fencing setback at least 20 feet from the wetland boundary, as recommended by the project biologist. The front third contained the outdoor arena + buildings. The barns face the street to address the scenic corridor requirements.
Thoughtful design is often a result of balancing local regulations with the client’s goals, and this project was a perfect example of the two working together. The quarter-sawn western red cedar + clear anodized aluminum window trim and gray standing seam metal roofing were selected to integrate the intent of local design guidelines. The Woodside Residential Design Guidelines encourage property owners to “emphasize or integrate the use of natural materials, such as wood or stone” and “choose finishes that blend with or complement the landscape”. The results exceeded the team’s expectations.
